Macronutrients - Proteins, Fats, and Carbohydrates

Proteins are the body's building blocks. Proteins are usually found in animal products such as meat, dairy, or eggs. They can also be found in plants like legumes and soybeans. Fats are a type of macro-nutrient and provide energy for your body by providing you with 9 calories per gram (g). They're generally high in cholesterol so should be consumed in moderation. Carbohydrates provide the body with 4 calories per g which are converted to glucose to provide the body with energy.


Micronutrients - Vitamins, Minerals, and Water

Micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts than macronutrients but are still vital for maintaining good health. Good sources of these nutrients include leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables.


What are the essential vitamins?

Vitamins are organic compounds that help our bodies function properly. There are two types of vitamins: water and fat-soluble.

Essential minerals are the key components that help your body function properly. They can consume food or supplements. There are many different types of essential minerals including calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorous, and iron.

Essential amino acids are building blocks for protein. There are nine essential amino acids that must be consumed in order to sustain life. The body cannot produce these on its own, so they must come from food sources or supplements.


How much should we eat of each?

It's not as simple as more is better when it comes to nutrition. The amount of food you need each day depends on your age, gender, weight, and physical activity level. As a general rule, people should aim to get 45% - 65% of their total calories from carbohydrates (including sugars), 20% - 35% from protein (including dairy), 10% - 35%, or less than that, from fat (including oils), and 5-10% or less than that from alcohol.
